I have been extremely blessed when it comes to having had opportunities to travel to some of the most beautiful places in the world. Years ago, I set out to experience 30 countries by age 30 and I will have surpassed this number by the end of this year at age 29! I thought and thought of ways that I could give back to others around the world and also how I could help someone gain international experience that they may have not otherwise had ever gotten the chance to do and this is how Traveling With A Purpose: Paying it Forward Around The World began.

This will be a two-part process:
1) I will take $15 (to symbolize the year 2015) and put it in a thank you card and bring it to every place I travel to leisurely. I will then give one card out per trip to someone who is deserving of a smile and a pick me up! This could be a front desk clerk at a hotel I am staying at, a cab driver who goes out of their way to show me their country, or a janitor who is cleaning up at a mall I visit.

I will then choose 1 person. This is in hopes that it will help someone receive a brand new outlook on life as I know firsthand that travel can do.
I am so excited for this year: traveling to new places, giving back to others, and sharing my book with those who I know can greatly benefit from it!

Oakland’s Beginnings as a Railroad Town

The Old Oakland Historic District was Oakland’s original downtown.  When the Central Pacific Railroad built its tracks in the 1860s to connect the East Coast with the West, the terminus was located at a railroad station on 7th Street in Old Oakland.  Downtown became a destination for train travelers going west.

By the 1870s elegant brick Victorian hotels to house travelers were rising in the blocks around the railroad station.  On the ground floor of these hotels were narrow shops, designed so that a pedestrian would pass many shops while walking down the block.  The new look in storefronts featured tall cast-iron columns and large plate glass windows.

After the 1906 earthquake, the downtown began a rapid decline as the shopping district moved to the blocks north of 14th Street.  By the 1950s, Old Oakland had become skid row and a center of prostitution. In the early 1960s, the City condemned many of the deteriorating buildings.  For almost 20 years, roofs leaked, plaster melted off the walls, and the buildings were in danger of being lost to neglect.   Treasure hunters seeking newel posts and marble mantels for their Victorian houses plundered the buildings.

In the late 1970s, the deteriorated buildings were bought by several far-sighted developers with a love of history and a fund of sweat equity.  Now Oakland’s heritage, its original downtown, has been returned to its 1870s elegance.  Upper floors now contain elegant offices, and restaurants and shops once again occupy storefronts.  Merchants and businesses owners in Old Oakland are very aware of the importance of preserving and enhancing this important piece of Oakland’s history.

Road Journey to Musandam… A Heavenly Experience!

The first section of my trip began in Dubai, where I got picked up from my location and headed 2-hours north through the Emirates of Sharjah and Ras-al Khaimah. It was a smooth journey cruising down a 12-lane highway.

Within an hour, the 12-lane expressway turned into a little 2-lane road (but wide enough for two SUVs to cross each other) climbing higher and higher into the mountainous territory. And the moment we crossed the border into Oman, words are not enough to describe the natural magnificence of the area. I had the Persian Gulf to my left side and, on the right? Epic cliffs… Oh Yes! I was in the Musandam Peninsula.

The place was incredibly beautiful. I don’t think I stopped heaving at the magnificence for the whole drive and I ended up pulling over at regular intervals or so to take photographs! There was something about having this amazing scenic beauty all to myself.

Exploring The Virgin Blue Water Beaches of Musandam… A Gift Of Mother Nature!

Musandam has one of the most beautiful blue water beaches in the emirates. The moment you cross the border, you will come across many beautiful virgin beaches, where you can swim, snorkel, and enjoy fishing.

As Dhow cruise was included in my Musandam Tour Package, I was very excited to experience it… The Dhow was very clean with beautiful carpets and comfortable cushions to relax and sit. My guide was very supportive and all the tourists on the boat were offered tea, coffee, dates, and fruits as compliments.

Seeing Beautiful Dolphins Gliding Along with Our Dhow Boat… It Was Pretty Magical!

While dhow cruising somewhere in the middle of the beautiful beaches of Musandam, the captain yelled “Look… Dolphins”! I was surprised to watch a pod of friendly dolphins diving along with our boat very closely. They were so cute and friendly that once I wanted to hold them in my hands and cuddle with them… especially the Baby Dolphins. All these dolphins were racing swiftly at the same pace, and performing high dives now and then.

Seeing all this was truly supernatural! I had never observed dolphins in the wild, and to be encompassed by such majestic views? This was way superior to anything Dubai could dream up!

Riding The Banana Boats… An Action-Packed Adventure In Musandam!

We then arrived at another beach in Musandam, which was much even more beautiful than the first. Here we saw a lot of lovely watercraft and yachts. We were invited by the guide on the boat and he ensured everything was prepared for a relaxed evening on the water.

Inflating up the banana boat, serving a few snacks, popping the cans of soda, and serving Arabic keyway, we were all prepared to go! When we left the port, we accelerated and had an incredible view of Musandam. The captain of the boat started off slow, but sped up very quickly against the powerful waves… the ride literally gave all of us a perfect adrenaline rush! Blue skies, tranquil sea, and sun warmth were ideal for a plunge into the Musandam Beaches.

Absorbing The Breathtaking Musandam Views From The Highest Mountain Peaks…

After lots of fun on the beaches, exploring the small towns of Musandam, discovering the rich cultural heritage of the area, we hopped back in our 4×4 cruiser and headed on a lovely mountainous drive. We drove to the top of some mountains from where we got stunning views of the beaches and Omani fjords. Here you will also explore some mountain caves and head inside them which are illuminated with lights and have sitting arrangements for tourists.

At the end of the tour, we were served delicious seafood at a 5-star restaurant. The lunch included a wide range of fresh seafood dishes such as shrimps, fish, and calamari.

We took the Abra boat ride across the Dubai creek and headed to the Deira city to explore Dubai Spice Souk… (I did some shopping as well :D)

The markets in the souk are always a pleasant way to experience the taste of the local style. From here you will take a boat ride across Dubai Creek to get to the more old part of the Dubai city called Deira. Reaching Deira is somewhat like venturing back in time to get a glimpse of what Dubai was like 100 years back!

The Spice Souk is not that crowded, very much organized, and will surely make your foodie heart truly flatter with the huge variety of spices, dried organic products, nuts, and teas. Possibly every tea flavor or spice you could imagine – you just name it, they have it!

I managed to take home some saffron, dried figs, some nuts, fresh vanilla beans, cinnamon sticks, plus the dried lavenders that I have always wanted to try for my baking project…

OMG! I was in the Gold Souk of Dubai… a place where I witnessed some of the world’s precious jewelry sets & also the $3 Million ring that can cover up a whole person’s body!

My cousin who has been to Dubai several times calls the Arabian city the Las Vegas of the Middle Eastern world, and as soon I got there I knew exactly what she meant by that… From eating at world-class restaurants, visiting the world’s tallest building Burj Khalifa, to skydiving and speed boating, Dubai, like Vegas, provides tourists with a plethora of fun activities! There is something amazingly beautiful about watching the sunset over the Dubai desert. Despite the fact that I was surrounded by many other tourists, I found a sense of contentment watching the sunshine up the sky with strokes of pink and purple until it vanishes behind the sand dunes in the distance. Daydreaming in my brain and simply gazing at the nothingness of the desert was truly a lovely change in contrast with the man-made city we left behind. Adventure Couldn’t Get Much Better Than This!

As the sun descended, we sat back in our Hummer H2 and head to the campsite, somewhere in the middle of the Arabian desert. The campsite gave a true feel of Emirati Culture, with Arabian rugs and cushions beautifully completing the perfect Aladdin-type look. There was free henna art for women, followed by a delicious dinner about halfway through the night. The Belly Dancing show and shisha smoking that comes afterward the dinner was highly entertaining.

Some Special Tips For Hummer Desert Safari Tourists:

My activities and meal were included in my package at the same price as the safari, so I wasn’t carrying much cash with me that day. However, I would advise bringing some cash with you, because when I saw the beautiful Arabian rugs, clothes, and souvenirs they were selling at the campsite, I regretted not bringing money with me.
